DART T3P soil moisture probes

Two Imko pico-profile T3P probes were installed in Diddington Clay Field in order to compare soil moisture (Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)) from an 'off-the-shelf' industry sensor against responses from the bespoke Birmingham probes. One Pico T3P probe was installed vertically within the archaeological profile and another was installed in the 'natural' soil. All readings were captured by a globelog logger and sent to the server at Imko (http://globelog.de/globelog/portal/listview.php logger number #149). One of these probes was kindly donated by Van Walt Ltd.

The archaeology array had the following probes:

32316 at a depth range of 10-21cm (note: 32316 was replaced by 32317 on the 24th February 2012)

32318 at a depth range of 40-51cm

32354 at a depth range of 70-81cm

The 'natural' array had the following probes:

32145 at a depth range of 10-21cm

32245 at a depth range of 40-51cm

32639 at a depth range of 70-81cm

A bespoke python script was used to download the arrays.

IMKO PICO-PROFILE T3P PROBE ACCURATE MOISTURE AND SALINITY MEASUREMENT IN SELECTED SOIL PROFILES Ideal for the development of soil-water balance models, irrigation control and salt content testing at different soil depths Simple and modular configuration Calibration curves for different soil types Connection of data logger via GPRS wireless modem Rugged and waterproof design The modular design allows up to 10 measurement segments PICOT3P in such a way that different soil depths/profile locations can be measured. Each PICO-T3P segment can be calibrated to the particular soil horizon. Calibration curves for sand, loess or clay are already stored in the measuring segment PICO-T3P and provide even higher precision in the measurement of the moisture content. PICO-PROFILE in addition to measuring soil moisture, measures the electrical conductivity (EC) of the soil, whereby the determination of the salt content in each soil horizon is possible. The measurement result can be calculated to the pore water conductivity Ecw or respectively to TDS (mg of salt per liter water). With a representative measurement field PICO-PROFILE penetrates deep into the soil around the access tube. Each PICO-T3P segment measures 1dm3 ground. PICO-PROFILE can be easy connect to the data logger globeLog which allows battery operation for long term storage of data. Optionally, the use of GPRS radio modem and SIM card is possible. Rugged and waterproof design guarantees a long-term operation in harsh environments. An RS485 interface or optional analogue-output-board allows data acquisition with external data loggers.
